Why Is Diet Important To Multiple Sclerosis? Food has the power to heal as well as to hurt. As people affected by MS, we need to focus on food that heals. Everything we put into our mouths ends up in our cells, the power houses of the factory that is our bodies. Certain foods will help the factory work more efficiently whereas other foods will slow down productivity and cause certain parts to malfunction. Such is the importance of the casual choices we make several times a day when we decide what to eat. For people with MS, this decision is even more important than for the average person. There are certain foods that seem to cause an allergicreaction in the body and activate the immune system. An auto- immune attack follows which results in a variety of multiple sclerosis symptoms. Before we discuss individual foods and how they impact our bodies, we must take a quick look at why the body reacts negatively towards certain food particles. Our stomach lining or gut is usually impermeable to food particles, preventing them from passing into the bloodstream. In a healthy gut, there are millions of microorganisms that help food to be properly digested and aid in keeping the stomach wall nice and healthy. However, it can become damaged through the use of substances such as antibiotics, non- steroidal anti- inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs), aspirin, alcohol and tobacco. It can also be caused when the healthy bacteria in our stomach is taken over by unhealthy bacteria. This condition is often referred to as Candida. Unfortunately most of us have a leaky gut now and then so we should all be carefully listening to our bodies to find out what foods make us feel vibrant with health or leave us feeling sluggish and bloated. A healthy MS diet will help minimise this as far as possible. Leaky Gut Syndrome - Activation of the Immune System. Our damaged stomach lining is now permeable and starts allowing tiny particles of undigested food into the bloodstream. The immune system mistakes the food particles for invaders and is activated to attack. When you eat that particular food again, the immune system remembers it as an invader and calls in the troops to begin an attack. A food sensitivity is thus created. Researchers have found that immune cells are first activated in the blood stream before they cross the blood brain barrier and do their damage in the nervous system. Just one tiny particle of food can cause this reaction so it's best to completely eliminate foods that you know could possibly lead to a relapse. That small bite of something 'naughty' just isn't worth it! Is This A Cure For MS? There isn't. Many doctors are still not convinced diet . The difficulty is that everyone reacts differently to having Multiple Sclerosis. Just as some people are allergic to certain foods while others are not, following an MS diet correctly is not a guarantee that it will work for you. But, you only have something to! Increasing your overall health is going to benefit you in ways you haven't yet imagined. I believe that everyone has a great chance of managing their MS successfully through diet. Once you understand that the stomach and MS are linked, it is clear that a healthy gut can. Reason enough for you to. Foods To Avoid - Dangerous for your MS Diet. MS nutrition is a vital element of the defence of body again Multiple Sclerosis. It is, however advisable to cut out all of the following foods for at least three months. This is enough time for your body to rid itself of all traces of these foods and for your stomach lining to heal itself. It appears that not all of the following foods have the same negative impact on every person with Multiple Sclerosis - if you are aware of any others, please leave a comment below. Dairy/Cow's Milk Products. Foods To Avoid: Milk, butter, buttermilk, cheese, cottage cheese, ice- cream, cream, whey powder. Researchers and nutritionists are becoming increasingly convinced that cow. Researchers have found a high correlation between cow. Studies conducted in Germany and Canada have provided a possible reasons why this may be so. The cow's milk MS link is further reinforced by the finding that certain proteins in cow. Soy products are also an option but eat them with caution because some people have a negative reaction to them. Gluten and Wheat. Foods To Avoid: Bread (white and brown), barley, bulgur, cous- cous, oats, pasta, biscuits, cakes, cookies, rye. Gluten is a protein found in the above foods. In many people with multiple sclerosis, this protein provokes the activation of the immune system, causing it to attack. It is interesting to note that wheat is a staple food in most of the countries in which MS frequently occurs. However, in many of the tropical countries, where Multiple Sclerosis is virtually unheard of, it is not a crop that is commonly grown. MS Diet Alternatives. Saturated Fats. Foods To Avoid: Red meat, butter, margarine, chocolate, lard, cheese. Dr. Roy Swank, probably the most famous Multiple Sclerosis diet researcher in the field had quite a bit to say about saturated fat. He was given the opportunity to spend 5 years researching MS and discovered that diet affected MS prognosis. His findings later became 'The Swank Diet'. One of the main proponents of his MS diet is eliminating saturated fat. His theory is that people with MS do not process saturated fats effectively which leads to embolisms of these fats forming in the bloodstream. This eventually leads to a breach the blood brain barrier, allowing activated immune cells to cross and do their damage. Swank's longitudinal study of MS nutrition, the participants who were disciplined about saturated fat consumption saw the most dramatic improvements in their conditions. However, Dr Terry Wahls, author and physician who has recovered from secondary progressive Multiple Sclerosis, does allow some saturated fats through grass- fed meats and venison - but after reading The China Study. Heated Fats (in any form)Foods To Avoid: Crisps, deep fried chips/fries, baked goods, roasted nuts, roast potatoes. Most fats change their molecular structure when they are heated at high temperatures. In this form, they cannot be absorbed by the body and instead do damage to the cells. When cooking, use a little coconut oil that is not easily damaged by heat. MS Diet Alternatives: Roasted vegetables sprinkled with olive oil once they are out of the oven, raw nuts, dehydrated nuts (using a dehydrater), popcorn (air popped in a popcorn maker and then tossed with olive oil). Note on Margarine: Even though this product is not technically a saturated fat, it is an exceptionally unhealthy fat to eat. Margarine contains trans- fatty acids which are not easily absorbed by the body. In fact, research shows that trans- fatty acids increase inflammation in the body. Margarine also contains artificial colouring agents, or it would look like bicycle grease. This is not something you want to be putting into your body! Caffeinated Drinks. Foods To Avoid: Coffee, cola chocolate, tea, energy drinks. Researchers have found evidence which suggests that caffeine may be bad for Multiple Sclerosis. The hormone adenosine is important for regulating the immune system and halting inflammatory reactions. It seems that caffeine can block the adenosine receptor and thus lower the effectiveness of adenosine for suppressing inflammation. MS Diet Alternatives: Decaffeinated coffee (this does still contain a small amount of caffeine so don't over do it), herbal teas such peppermint tea, camomile tea and fruit infused teas (as long as all the additives are natural and comply). Prolonged levels of elevated insulin have been shown to contribute to inflammation. It also has a negative, deregulating effect on the immune system. Don't even think about replacing sugar with artificial sweeteners. The sweetness of artificial sweeteners actually triggers the pancreas to secrete more insulin than regular table sugar does. Excessive sugar consumption is also one of the factors involved in candida overgrowth which leads to Leaky Gut Syndrome. MS Diet Alternatives: Set honey, maple syrup, dried fruit, dates, date. However, I wouldn't recommend eating these products too often. Gelatin Uses and Benefits . Price foundation, there are various health benefits to Gelatin, including: Supports skin, hair and nail growth. Good for joints and can help joint recovery. Can help tighten loose skin (like the kind you get after having four babies in five years. These amino acids are needed not only for proper skin, hair and nail growth, but for optimal immune function and weight regulation! Glycine, which makes up about 1/3 of the amino acids in gelatin powder is anti- inflammatory and evidence is finding that it can help speed wound healing. Glycine in gelatin can also help improve sleep ease and quality. Gelatin Beneftis. Gelatin has been added to formulas to support joint health, and many people do notice almost immediate joint relief from it, though the reason may not be so. As this great article from a Ph. As an added benefit, it is giving me extra protein and collagen and helps absorption of other minerals. If you are trying to improve skin or joint health or do strength training, I’d recommend gelatin over whey proteins (which are often inflammatory and have added ingredients). I’ve also added it to food and drinks I make for my kids to help them better absorb nutrients. Gelatin seems to be especially effective when taken with meats (balances out the amino acids) or on an empty stomach (to promote Human Growth Hormone production). Optimally, we’d be able to consume high- quality homemade bone broth (or a high- quality storebought one) a few times a day and would be well balanced and have no need for extra gelatin. Since I’m not there yet, I’ve actually been supplementing with high quality. Not the stuff from the store, though you can make some healthy Jello variations with it (recipes soon!). So Gelatin is a wonderful supplement for health, but I’ve also found a plethora of culinary and other uses lately! Here are a few of my favorites: 1. Homemade Marshmallows. This is definitely my kids’ favorite use of Gelatin, and we even add probiotics to make them more healthy. The only ingredients are honey, gelatin, vanilla and water, so they are a great alternative to store bought treats. These are also easy to make and you can add cocoa powder or mint extract for flavor variations. Hair Treatment. I got this tip from Pinterest and have been amazed at what an intensive conditioning and strengthening treatment it is! To make, stir 1 tablespoon of Gelatin powder. Add 1/2 cup warm/hot water, 1 teaspoon of apple cider vinegar and 1 teaspoon of honey to create a thick gel/liquid. Pour into hair and massage through hair and scalp. Leave on for at least 5 minutes and rinse with hot water. Shampoo as normal. It is suggested to do this up to a few times a week to get desired hair thickness/strength and then once a week for. DIY Children’s Vitamins. Most store bought chewable vitamins have a lot of sugar, dyes and additives in them. These homemade chewable vitamins are a great alternative, plus your kids will get the benefits of Gelatin too! There are endless flavor combinations, and They are simple to make at home! Thickening Shampoo. If you want thicker/stronger hair, adding a teaspoon of gelatin powder to your shampoo can give your hair that boost. It will also add texture and volume to hair immediately. If you use homemade shampoo like mine, you will only need to add about 1/2 tsp to a small batch. If you use a regular bottle shampoo, you can add a teaspoon or more for desired effect! Homemade Jello. Homemade jello packets have some nasty fake ingredients, but it is simple to make a healthy version at home. With homemade Jello, you can customize the flavors, add vitamins, or even use water kefir or kombucha as the base for a vitamin and probiotic boost! Wrinkle Reducer. You know those $5. Save a lot of money by just taking gelatin internally each day and using coconut oil for skin care! Gelatin is essentially cooked, powdered collagen (that ingredient they charge you an arm and a leg for that doesn’t even work well externally. Digestive Aid. Constipation? Gelatin might help! Nourishing. I’ve noticed tremendous benefits in our son who we put on the GAPS protocol, and I’ve also seen daily gelatin help keep bowels regular and smooth. Joint Help. Gelatin also provides the building blocks for healthy joints and people with arthritis, joint injuries or joint pain might notice a substantial difference from incorporating Gelatin rich foods and supplements. Even Web. MD talks about the joint uses of Gelatin: “Gelatin is used for weight loss and for treating osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis, and brittle bones (osteoporosis). Some people also use it for strengthening bones, joints, and fingernails. Gelatin is also used for improving hair quality and to shorten recovery after exercise and sports- related injury.”9. Skin Mask. Gelatin is most effective when used internally, but even externally, it can smooth and strengthen skin. Another tip: Mix 1 tablespoon Gelatin Powder with 2 tablespoons warm water and 1 tablespoon fresh lemon juice and apply to face. Leave on for 1. 5 minutes and rinse with warm water. Weight Loss. I haven’t tried it specifically for this purpose, but I’ve found forums of athletes and body builders who use plain gelatin powder for weight loss and. The most cost effective and nutrient dense way to consume Gelatin is in the form of homemade bone broth or stock. Of course, bone broth isn’t as good for making marshmallows, gummy vitamins, jello or hair masks, but it is an inexpensive way to consume Gelatin. I also add Gelatin powder to soups and stews for an extra gelatin boost, but if you don’t want to attempt all the other uses, at least consider incorporating homemade bone broth into your daily diet. Your gut will thank you! Notes: I am not a doctor and don’t play one on the internet. If you decide to use Gelatin as a supplement, check with your doctor or medical professional, especially if you have a medical condition. To mix gelatin powder. Let sit for 2 minutes and then add the needed amount of warm water. This tempers the gelatin and makes it smooth. This is also how I take it daily by adding it to herbal teas this way. You can also get blue lid collagen powder which does not gel but easily dissolves in hot or cold water. Do not add gelatin powder to things with fresh pineapple, kiwi or papaya, as they will inactivate the thickening properties. Also, don’t boil gelatin, as it will lose its thickening ability. High in Omega 6 Fatty Acids One of the biggest health benefits of eating fish is getting Omega 3’s. You aren’t going to find that in Tilapia. In fact, you may be doing harm instead of good by eating it! Tilapia has higher levels of potentially detrimental long- chain omega- 6 fatty acids than 8. For individuals who are eating fish as a method to control inflammatory diseases such as heart disease, it is clear from these numbers that tilapia is not a good choice,” the article says. That seems pretty high. And pretty darn, not good for you too. All things considered, I just don’t think that tilapia is a good choice in seafood. Sure it’s cheap, but I can buy grassfed beef for the same price or cheaper per pound, and that will contain a much better ratio of omega 3 to 6 fatty acids. Tilapia may be sustainable, but that’s doesn’t mean it’s good for you. My only disclaimer is that there could be fisheries who follow better practices. If you are going to eat tilapia, try to find a good source for it and ask about specific practices. But before I made it a common food in our diet, I would also like to see some data on the omega 3 to 6 fatty acid ratio in tilapia feed duckweed. So what do you think?
